Give Me a Place to Stand and I will Move the World

Bobby Kennedy quoted the Greek mathematician and engineer Archimedes as follows: “Give me a place to stand,” said Archimedes, “and I will move the world.” When I first read RFK’s quote I said wait a minute, Archimedes said “Give me a place to stand and with a lever I will move the world.” Bobby Kennedy left the words “with a lever” out of the quote. Why?
Over the years as I strived to bring more and more social justice, I continued to reflect on Bobby Kennedy’s quote of Archimedes. I realized something, as I believed Bobby Kennedy did, that I wasn’t really leaving the “lever” out of Archimedes quote for I was the “lever.”
Archimedes did say: “Give me a place to stand and with a lever I will move the whole world.”
As a lever, Bobby Kennedy said “Give me a place to stand and I will move the world.”
As a lever, I can say “Give me a place to stand and I will move the world.”
As levers, let us all say “Give me a place to stand and I will move the world.”
